What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis (eg BЂњost-you-in-time-in-sissBЂ ") occurs when bones become porous in loss of calcium (see figure below). This is called loss of bone mass. Over time, this weakens the bones and makes them more likely to break. After the total bone mass reached its peak BЂ "about 35 years BЂ" all adults start to lose it. However, women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. This is due to several factors. Women have less bone mass than men, tend to live longer and take in less calcium. In women, the rate of bone loss accelerates after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. Estrogen from the ovaries make faster bone loss may occur if both ovaries are removed surgically.
